I have had a three “Letters to the Editor” published in the New York Times. I was surprised to learn that the Times edits the letters. And it’s not just for grammar and accuracy. They edit for brevity — and clarity. As the mathematician, Blais Pascal, said, “I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time.” If you get your letter published in the Times, they’ll save you the time by editing it for you!
